The Pediatric Sedation web site contains the Pediatric Sedation course's content formatted for the web. It is divided into sections and subsections, with most subsections having short quizzes. The quizzes are there to help you gauge your level of comfort with the material in a given section/subsection.

To take a quiz, simply click on the "Quiz" link at the bottom of the page and sign in. If have already signed in recently, you will be taken straight to the quiz. If you don't have an account, you can add yourself to the Pediatric Sedation web site database by following the "sign up now" link on the quiz sign in page (you will need to know the General Access Password, given to you by the Site Administrator).

About This Module

NEEDS ASSESSMENT: This four-hour, self-paced, web-based educational activity is designed to assist those who wish to provide moderate and deep sedation in accordance with policies and procedures at Children's Hospital Central California. Printed selections of this activity are available upon request.

TARGET AUDIENCE: The target audience for this module is those physicians seeking privileges in moderate and deep sedation and those nurses seeking to be providers of sedation.

EDUCATIONAL CONTENT: Sedation for diagnostic and painful procedures is a growing and dynamic area of pediatric practice. This course is intended to present the basic information required to provide safe sedation. The course has been designed to include three components:

  1. the pre-sedation period including general considerations for sedation
  2. the intra-procedure sedation process including the process, monitors and drugs used for sedation
  3. the post-sedation time period with an accent on discharge criteria and appropriate conditions for discharge

NEEDS ADDRESSED and LEARNING OBJECTIVES: This sedation module addresses the need to provide comprehensive training on the management of the patient undergoing procedural sedation. At the end of the module, the participant will:

The intent of this disclosure is not to prevent speakers with significant financial or other relationships from making presentations, but rather to provide listeners with information on which they can make their own judgments. Neither physician had disclosures that the Education committee deemed to be significant. Only midazolam is "FDA-approved" for pediatric use. All other drugs are commonly used in the pediatric setting but are off-label.
